Making sense of my traumatised child: what could be going on at a sensory level that a parent needs to be aware of?
Family Futures is inviting adoptive parents, foster carers and kinship carers to watch this free recording of the live webinar which took place with Mandy Ruddock, who was an Occupational Therapists at Family Futures at the time of recording: 22 March 2022.
We all respond differently to sensory inputs, however children who have experienced adversity in the womb and early childhood are particularly prone to difficulties in accurately perceiving and processing sensory inputs from the environment such as sounds, touch and light, due to a poorly developed sensory system. This affects their ability to develop self-regulation.
In this webinar, Mandy introduces parents to the basics of sensory processing as applied to both, children whose sensory development has been impaired by early life trauma, and themselves as parents of these children.
Webinar participants had the opportunity to participate in activities that engaged their own senses to support understanding.
Mandy also suggested practical sensory strategies to help children, and also parents, regulate their sensory systems.
