Sensory Integration

Our Wellbeing Hub offers a Sensory Integration assessment with one of our specialised Occupational Therapists as the first step for Sensory Integration work with your child or young person.

Sensory integration difficulties or differences can be the result of many different things, such as genetic factors, or experience of disrupted childhood development, which could be linked to a difficult birth, hospitalisation in early childhood, parental mental health or separation, as well as neglect and abuse.  Some conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and exposure to drugs or alcohol in the womb, are much more likely to have a sensory component, which can affect how well a child is able to manage everyday life.

Sensory Integration assessments and therapy at The Wellbeing Hub – Emily, Occupational Therapist

At Family Futures we think understanding sensory integration and working out if a child or young person has difficulties integrating sensory input is really important and can be a great first step in supporting children to feel more confident, happier and safer within their world.

Stand Alone Assessment – Sensory Integration

We offer a Sensory Integration Stand Alone Assessment by one of our specialist Occupational Therapists. The Assessment will involve an initial thirty-minute call with the parent, completion of screening tools and an in-person assessment (2 hours). The OT will then complete a brief assessment report.

In the initial call, the OT will aim to gain insight into your child’s strengths and difficulties. They will ask questions about current challenges, how they manage in daily life and school and developmental milestones. The OT will also discuss with you the best way to engage your child in the assessment, to ensure a positive experience for everyone.

Assessments are tailored to each child’s needs and ability. The assessment will use a range of standardised tools to assess sensory-motor-visual ability and how this affects every day living.

After the assessment, the OT will write a report about your child which will be shared with you. The OT will then arrange a feedback call with you to talk about the outcome of the assessment and make recommendations going forward.

Sensory Integration therapy sessions

If you would like to book Sensory Integration therapy with Family Futures following the assessment, you can book six-week blocks of sessions. These will take place in our purpose-built sensory gyms.
