Managing rage – Positive Interventions

Research (Selwyn 2014) shows that some adoptive children are violent towards their parents. For parents, carers and social workers this may be a familiar story. Many adopted children, who have experienced trauma, respond to stress in fight, flight or freeze mode. This can lead to difficult behaviour and violent outbursts.

It is important that parents and carers are supported and guided to avoid conflict situations and reduce stress levels. If a scenario arises where a child becomes dysregulated and needs restraining, it is important that the restraint is carried out safely to avoid causing harm. This will also stop the situation from escalating.
