Adoption matters: A training for virtual schools and designated teachers
The Children and Social Work Bill currently being processed through parliament aims to ensure more support for looked-after children, children under special guardianship and adopted children through extending the role of virtual schools, heads and designated teachers. Inherent in the bill is the legal necessity for staff to undertake appropriate training and to give advice to staff.
For 11 years, Family Futures has been supporting schools in developing teacher understanding of the holistic impact of adverse in-utero experiences and early trauma by delivering training and providing cohesive strategies to use within the education setting.
Standard Professional, Associate Professional
This course explores the impact of early trauma on the brain and body, and how this influences the child’s presentation within the education setting, ranging from disruptive and acting-out behaviour to compliance and people-pleasing conduct.
It suggests tried and tested strategies for the education setting, for home-school relations and ideas to support parents.
Recognising that virtual schools and designated teachers are often the ‘first call’ for parents, the course looks at home-school communication and suggests ways of supporting these parents in their own understanding of their child.
The course will provide pointers to accessing appropriate support for LAC and adopted children in relation to Education, Health and Care Plans etc.
