PARENT MENTORING COURSES
Family Futures has devised a 5-day course for parents wishing to be parent mentors and for social workers who are training and supporting parent mentors.

PARENT MENTORING: 5-DAY COURSE top
Over the last decade Family Futures have pioneered 'Parent Mentoring' in the field of adoption & fostering. Parent Mentors are experienced parents who have been trained to educate, counsel, support and develop parenting strategy programmes, for parents who are caring for challenging children. Their role is to work alongside social workers and therapists to provide a genuine and effective "wrap around" therapeutic package.

The effectiveness of parent mentors is determined by their personal experience or parenting challenging children, their empathy for parents and traumatised children and an expert knowledge base.

Based on our experience of training and supporting parent mentors, Family Futures has devised a 5-day course for parents wishing to be parent mentors and for social workers who are training and supporting parent mentors. The course is also based upon our recently published book 'New Families, Old Scripts - The Adoptive Parents' Guide to the Language of Trauma and Healing Attachments'.

The course comprises the following elements: -

Day 1 - The theory and research on the impact of early trauma on child development

Day 2 - Comparing different 'schools' of parenting strategies
- Planning a parent support programme
- A video case example

Between the first 2-day module and the second 2-day module there is a 2-month period to enable course participants to implement programmes and to carry out 'homework' assignments.

Day 3 - Video case examples of parenting strategies for children with different types of attachment difficulty

Day 4 - Executive Functioning and Executive Functioning Strategies for children at home and at school

A further 2-month period of supported implementation of parenting strategies programmes with families from the participant's agency.

Day 5 - Case consultation and course review

The course will be taught using a small group format of direct teaching, video and case examples.

Throughout the course, participants will have access to telephone consultations with the parent mentors running the course.

Course participants will receive a training pack comprising:
  • Book: New Families, Old Scripts - The Adoptive Parents' Guide to the Language of Trauma and Healing Attachments
  • A CD ROM of Parenting Strategies Handouts
  • Certificate of Attendance

Cost: £900 + VAT (Incl. lunch, handbook & all training material)
