FINDING LOST WORLDS;
Working With Traumatised Children
This series of six workshops is designed for: -
- Social Workers
- Psychologists
- Guardians
- Family Placement Social Workers
- CAMHS Therapists
- Play Therapists
Who intend to work or are working with looked after and adopted children
Social Workers are often apprehensive about engaging in direct work with children or feel deskilled about how to approach this work. Clinicians with therapy training often have not worked with significant numbers of looked after or adopted children and are therefore not familiar with key issues in family placement. This course is aimed at addressing the core issues in working therapeutically with looked after and adopted children, enhancing participants skills and giving them confidence to work directly with children and young people.
All children today who need permanent care, be it fostering or adoption, have experienced relationship and developmental trauma. If permanent placements are to be permanent then early traumatic experiences need to be addressed and resolved. This course addresses the impact of developmental trauma on children and looks at ways to enhance the security of placements.
These 6 afternoon workshops are embedded in attachment and trauma theory and are influenced by the work of Dan Hughes and Theraplay. Participants have to attend all workshops as it is an integrated course.
The workshops cover the following topics: -
- Developmental trauma
- Processing the trauma of separation
- Preparing children for placement moves
- Life story work with traumatised children
- Fostering attachments
- Dealing with disclosures
The 6 afternoon workshops running from 14:00-17:00hrs are facilitated by a child therapist who will demonstrate practical techniques and discuss participant’s cases.
